During Citrix Synergy 2019 Citrix Managed Desktops was announced, which is Citrix newly built Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS). I’ve found Citrix Managed Desktops very interesting due to a number of interesting features it will provide. Citrix Managed Desktops is built on Windows Virtual Desktop, and will run compute-instances on Azure, but provided by Citrix alone. Thus all costs will be associated with your subscription for your Citrix Cloud tenant. As Citrix Managed Desktops is based on Windows Virtual Desktop, you’ll be able to use Windows 10 Multi-session for your machines.

Getting started with Citrix Managed Desktops is easy! Either ”quick create” or ”custom create” your catalog, Citrix will then provision two Cloud Connectors (for each resource location) in the background and your desktops with the image of your choice.

You’ll be able to use pre-defined images to provision catalogs and machines. You’ll also be able to build your own image via the Citrix Managed Desktops console, a machine will then be provisioned for configuring the image with your applications and customizations, without any other Citrix-infrastructure needed.
Both Apps and Desktops will be available to publish with Citrix Managed Desktops, just like an ordinary Virtual Apps and Desktops deployment. Citrix new AutoScale will also be included in the service, which will be interesting for lowering your costs of the compute-instances (Which you’ll find further down).
There will be a bunch of deployment scenarios for Citrix Managed Desktops – These are the initial ones Citrix has acknowledged:

  • Non-domain VDA:s
    • Citrix-managed Azure AD
    • BYO Azure AD
    • On-premise AD
  • Domain-joined VDA:s
    • BYO Azure AD
    • Azure AD + On-premise AD
    • On-premise AD

Citrix Managed Desktops will initially be released in the following Azure-regions:

  • West Europe
  • West US
  • East US
  • Australia East

Costs for Citrix Managed Desktops consists by three different categories and are subscription based (Per month per user):

  • Citrix Managed Desktops – 16$ (Costs for Citrix Cloud and access to Citrix Managed Desktops Service – Minimum 25 users)
  • Microsoft licenses – 6,25$ (RDS SAL – You’ll be able to bring your own!)
  • Azure-consumption – (Compute-instances, storage etc)

Citrix Managed Desktops was announced during the keynote of Citrix Synergy, but more in-depth information was also provided during this session and on the documentation site.
